Check out this closeup of the surface detail on an historic Harper's Weekly newspaper masthead with the embossed typestrike from the reverse side clearly visible. This is a 400dpi true optical resolution, full-color capture. Baked-in sharpening or unsharp mask algorithms on normal scans won't reveal this image information. What makes this possible?
